Imokilly Single Stage 2014
A very warm day greeted the competitors on the third running of the Ace Signs Imokilly Motor Club Single Stage.
The winners Wesley Patterson / Johnny Baird in the 2.5 Escort set the pace from the start and held the lead throughout the event.
On the first stage Patterson in the Escort was the only man to dip under the 10 minute time for the stage. Last year's winner Roy White in the MG slotted into second place, 7 seconds down, followed by Barry Meade the 2012 winner in third.
Jason Ryan / Tadhg O Sullivan were in an Incredible
4th in the Honda engined Starlet, the local crew thinking they were down on power but setting the stage alight. Fifth was Frank Kelly in the Escort ahead of another local crew on the move Mark Dolphin / Finbarr Quirke, however Mark thought he was too cautious in places and was now 10 seconds behind Jason Ryan. Next up was Allen Treacy who complained of tyre pressure problems making the car giddy in the corners. The top 10 was rounded of by Stephen McCann in the Evo, Alastair Cochrane in another Escort and Vincent McSweeney in his Honda Civic.
A slight shower between stage one and two made no difference as the road dried quickly and Wesley Patterson once again set the pace with a time of 9.48.5. Roy White stepped up his pace with a time of 9.51.5 while Barry Meade did 9.58.9 and Frank Kelly was getting more into it with a 10.06. The battle for top IMC crew was heating up with Jason Ryan again setting a blistering time of 10.04 but Mark Dolphin
had not given up hopes for first IMC club crew home as he did 10.09.6. Stephen McCann, Alastair Cochrane , IMC member Allen Treacy and Tom Flaherty rounded out the top ten times for the second run.
So with stage 3 to go it looked like two big battles, one for the rally lead between Wesley Patterson who had 10 seconds on Roy White and the other for top IMC crew home between Jason Ryan who had 15 seconds on Mark Dolphin.
Roy White set a stunning time on stage 3 of 9.43 however it was too little too late and with Wesley Patterson setting a
time of 9.47 he emerged as the rally winner by 6 seconds. Barry Meade stayed in third followed by Frank Kelly in fourth. Fifth was the flying Jason Ryan / Tadhg O’Sullivan, First IMC Crew home and absolutely delighted with their great finish.
Stephen McCann was sixth in the Evo and Mark Dolphin / Finbarr Quirke made a big attack on the last stage and had a costly spin that lost them about 15 seconds and an overall place as he slipped to 7th. Next up was the steady Alastair Cochrane who won class 13 and 8th overall ahead of IMC crew Allen Treacy / Bob Fitzgerald 9th overall who set their best time on the last stage .The top 10 was rounded out by Tom Flaherty in his Escort.
This result gives Wesley Patterson’s chances in the Plasticbags.ie Southern4 Championship a points boost.
At the finish ramp all the top crews praised the Imokilly Motor Club for running a great event and commenting that the stage was as good as any stage in the country, a real driver’s stage. The club would like to thank everyone who helped in any way with the running of the event and in particular the residents on the stage and the people of the Cloyne area for supporting the rally.
